Rabbit Crisis in Southern
California A few years ago, rabbits became the third most popular house pet. Fortunately, more people know that rabbits should live in the house and not outside in a hutch. There is easily accessible, valuable information about proper rabbit care available on the Internet, as well as at rescue events and veterinary offices. Therefore, many more rabbits have been provided with a safe, indoor environment, the right diet, a litter box. They are spayed or neutered as well as taken to an exotic vet who is rabbit knowledgeable. Unfortunately, more and more rabbits are being turned into city and county shelters, dumped in the streets, schools and parks. Now they have become the third most dumped animal. Here at the Bunny Bunch we receive numerous calls and emails daily from people who have found a rabbit, who no longer want their rabbit, as well as requests from city and county shelters asking us to take rabbits so they don't have to kill them. The shelters are always overloaded with rabbits no one wants anymore. The most common reasons people decide to give up their rabbits are that they are moving, or, that the child they got the rabbit for has lost interest, doesn't take care of it anymore, or has moved out. Rabbits
move fine from city to city, even across the county. People have even
moved overseas with their rabbits. Parents need to be responsible and
take over the care when the child moves out. Getting a rabbit or any pet for a child is a huge mistake in the first place. When your child loses interest, who will take care of the animal? When you want to get rid of the "pet', what is that teaching your child; that animals are "throw away" pets or the life is expendable? Having a rabbit as part of the family can be a rewarding way for a child to grow up, if the children are well behaved and supervised at all times. Children should never be allowed to handle small, fragile animals like rabbits without constant adult supervision. They should also not be tasked with the feeding, cleaning and care of an animal when they can not even fully take care of themselves. This does not teach them responsibility like many parents think it will. It just teaches them what it is like to see a poor, defenseless animal suffer, or get injured and die. Do you really want your children the witness this? Before
you get a rabbit, or any other kind of animal, please take the time
to learn about their care and their life span. A rabbit can live over
twelve years, a guinea pig can live eight years or more, and a chinchilla
can live sixteen plus years. Only adopt if you can make a commitment
to care for the animal for the rest of its life. "FUR IS DEAD"-PETA
and The Bunny Bunch
The celebrities were all instructed in proper bunny handling to ensure the buns' safety, and the little buns relaxed between between shots in a special green room with, appropriately, greens, and hay-filled litter boxes. The celebrities were all curious to hear stories about their co-stars, and to learn about spay/neutering, potty training and indoor living. The photogenic little buns were scared in the beginning because of the flashing lights, but they were soon cruising around the couch and the room, checking out their new playground. Plus, the celebs gave them hours worth of headrubs and kisses, which ake any bunny relax. After their adventure ended, the fuzzy superstars went back to their foster home to relax and see their other siblings. Their next project, they hope, will be moving into loving forever homes!

IT'S
HOT OUT THERE! In Southern California it has been over 100 degrees for days now. Rabbits cannot survive the heat outside, or inside without air-conditioning. Or, without lots of help from you to stay cool. If your rabbits live indoors make sure you have your air running, even when you are not home. Also, be prepared in case you lose power. If your rabbits live outdoors BRING THEM INSIDE. Even if you set them up in a small bathroom, crate or large carrier during the hot parts of the day, its better than being outside (with air-conditioning inside, of course). Rabbits cannot cool themselves by sweating like people do, and they can't pant like dogs to cool themselves down. Imagine not being able to sweat or pant, and having a fur coat on in this hot weather. The outcome is death. Here are some tips to keep rabbits cool without air-conditioning: If your rabbits are outside they must be 100% in the shade. Add a misting system so the mist can cool part of their living area during the day. If hay or pellets get wet make sure you replace them as they will mold. Your rabbit does need to have a dry area so make sure the misters are only on part of his living quarters. People often say that wild rabbits survive outside so why can't domestic rabbits. Wild rabbits dig burrows where they spend the hot part of the day in the cool underground soil. If your rabbit is outside in a hutch or cage they are not able to get away from the heat and are often found dead due to heat stroke, which is a horribly painful way to die. Fill several two liter soda bottles with water and freeze. Keep one or two in your rabbits living area throughout the day, and at night if it is hot. Be sure to replace them when the ice has melted. Use a couple of marble tiles for your rabbits to lay on. They stay cool compared to other materials. Your rabbits drinking water will become very warm. Get large crocks for water and fill with ice cubes and water, adding more ice cubes as often as you can throughout the day. Don't forget in hot weather rabbits will drink more water, even if they are indoors. A fan alone will not cool a rabbit as they don't sweat. But it can help move the air around. If you drape a wet towel over your rabbits living area and have a fan blowing on it that will help cool the air. Rabbits cool themselves through their ears, so wetting their ears with cool water can help too. Heat Stroke If your rabbit starts panting or is wet around the mouth or nose area, he or she could have heat stroke. If this happens cool you rabbit down straight away by cooling the ears with cool water. Lay your rabbits on a towel that has been soaked in cool water. You must take your rabbit to a rabbit knowledgeable vet right away. Shelter Rabbits Need Help Too! There are many rabbits in city and county shelters that are housed outside. You can help by becoming a volunteer with Bunny Bunch. We send volunteers to shelters to take ice water bottles, set up cooling systems and keep the rabbits as cool as we can. You can also help by fostering a rabbit in your home. Please keep your rabbits alive by keeping them cool! For more information please contact caroline@bunnybunch.org. These

We have lots of successful programs set up like this, but we want more We have been approved to lease a building in the city of Montclair, California. This will be our "official" Bunny Bunch Headquarters. We are planning on having rabbits, chinchillas and guinea pigs for adoption. We will be holding education classes and fundraisers, plus will have our Bunny Bunch Boutique store there for all your rabbit needs. This
has always been our dream, and to make it come true we need to raise
$5,000 to get started. We need to paint, put in new flooring, get blinds,
three air-conditioning units, and a veggie cooler, plus set- ups for
our foster rabbits, chins and piggies. We need a security system, plus
lots of storage As you may remember, earlier this year we rescued over 500 rabbits from a park in Garden Grove. We still have lots of these rabbits in foster homes, plus the rabbits that we rescue from shelters. We are sure by having our own center that we will expand our rescue, adoption and education efforts. Please help us make this happen, by donating, volunteering and telling people about Bunny Bunch and what we do. If you would like to make a donation to our building fund, please click here. Bunnies Who Need a Home Soon...
These two boys were rescued from the Garden Grove water reservoir area along with around 500 other bunnies. They were tiny babies back then and one had the sniffles, but their foster mom took such good care of them and nursed them back to health. Once they were neutered they moved to a new foster home, where they've been happy but they need more than that. They really need a bunny proofed room or home where they can run around a lot. An x-pen is not sufficient for these young lads. Stevie is a chill Hotot mix bunny who loves to stretch out and relax. Everyday is a lazy Stevie day. He doesn't mind being held, unlike his best pal, Creamsicle, a little orange and white Dutch who is slowly learning that he's now safe, unlike the old days back in the scary Great Outdoors. Creamsicle turns to Stevie for protection. They're both very sweet boys and are glad to have each other. Please email bunnystuff@hotmail.com for more information about these little guys. Please

Petsmart Selling
Baby Rabbits in 40 of Their Stores Petsmart has decided to sell baby rabbits in 40 of their stores as a "test". They have ordered up specially bred dwarf rabbits which they intend to spay or neuter at a very young age. The Bunny Bunch and rabbit rescues nationwide are horrified by this decision. Petsmart, through it's charity Petsmart Charities, has been a friend of rescue for many years. Rescue and adoption groups have supported Petsmart's decision to not sell puppies, kittens and rabbits, which makes this decision to sell baby rabbits such a huge betrayal. We are concerned for many reasons including these: READ MORE.... We
did it!
As you know from our previous updates, the trapping company did come in to the park and trap a lot of rabbits. We took all the rabbits we have room for from the trapping company, but at that time did not have enough room for all of them, so some had to go to the Orange County shelter. But, we paid the shelter for the rabbits as soon as they got there. That bought us some time to find more foster homes, plus the shelter would not be able euthanized the rabbits as now they belonged to us. It would ensure that they would be spayed or neutered at the shelter to prevent further litters from being born. We are picking up the last of the rabbits from the OC shelter this week. We started this rescue not knowing how we were going to fund this rescue, where we were going to foster all these rabbits, and didn't even know if we would be allowed enough time to complete this rescue. Thanks to the wonderfully dedicated volunteers, those who donated money to help us with spay/neuter and medical costs, and to the media who publicized our needs. Because of all of you we were 100% successful. Two new rabbits did get dumped there a couple of weeks ago, we were able to scoop them right up. We got them fixed and they are in a foster home waiting for a forever home. We have hundreds of rabbits from this rescue that still need homes, so now we will be working hard to seek out more rabbit lovers who can commit to giving these rabbits a lovely forever home. We are waiting for the county to come through with what they promised us; replacing gates and fencing to help prevent more animals from being dumped at the park, as well as putting up signs about not dumping animals. Hopefully this will happen in the next week or two. After all our hard work, we need them to take care of the problem that started all this in the first place. This rescue saved the lives of over 500 rabbits, plus some guinea pigs and many birds. It didn't cost the City or County any money at all. We are proud of this accomplishment, and are very thankful for all your support. Desiree Needs
Your Help!
Can you help us help dear little Desiree? Right now she wont eat any hay (which is critical to a buns GI tract and hay also keeps the teeth healthy and filed down), we have to soften her pellets in order for her to eat and she also isnt eating vegetables (another important part of a buns diet) so teeth are definitely suspect.
Thanks a Bunny Bunch. With your help Desiree may eventually find her forever home. Garden Grove Rabbit Rescue Update The good
news is that we have been able to rescue 450 rabbits from the park in
Garden Grove so far. On May 19 we held three adoption events in different
cities and were able to place over 40 rabbits. The following day we did
a round up of 50 rabbits from the park. Last Chance
to Help the Garden Grove Rabbits
We have been able to rescue over 300 of the domestic rabbits from the park in Garden Grove, California where they were abandoned and left to fend for themselves. But now we only have until May 20th to rescue the remaining 200 adults, plus babies. On May 21st a trapping company is being hired. We have been busy rescuing rabbits from the park, sexing, separating, getting them spayed or neutered and into homes or foster homes. But, we have no room left for the rest of the abandoned rabbits. Our foster homes are full so we need your help. All these rabbits deserve forever homes. We have lots of lovely rabbits - singles, pairs, trios and groups already spayed and neutered just waiting for homes. To see the full story click here. You can also see video clips of the rabbits and volunteers as seen on Fox, ABC and CBS national news. We have had wonderful support from animal lovers all over the country, we have found lots of lovely homes and have received donations to help with the spay, neuter and medical costs. BUT, we need more in order to make this a 100% successful rescue. Unfortunately vandals get into this fenced off park at night time. We have found rabbits taped up in boxes, sling shots on the ground and so far have had five rabbits with broken legs and other injuries. So we need funding not just for spay/neuter and care, but for medical costs too. We have volunteers patrolling the park everyday and are hoping to get help from the police department at night time. We are holding three big adoption events on Saturday, May 19th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will have lots of rabbits there for you to meet. If you are interested in adopting please fill out our adoption application by clicking here. We do prefer indoor homes as they are much safer, but we are accepting some safe outdoor homes too. While our standard adoption fee is $85, we are just asking for a donation of any amount if you can afford to give one, so that we can carry on the work we are doing for the rabbits. On May 19th our events are being held at: Petco 3820 Grand Ave, Chino Hills, CA 91710 Petsmart 7600 Edinger Ave., Huntington Beach, CA 82647 Centinela Feed 1448 Lincoln Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90401 For more information please call our hotline at (909) 591-7200, or email Caroline. Time is running out, we have less than two weeks to find homes for all these rabbits and save them from a terrible ending! Angel

links below to review local media coverage: URGENT!!!! Urgent help needed for 300 to 500 bunnies in southern California. Companion bunnies, not wild bunnies, abandoned in a park are being killed by locals and will be destroyed by overwhelmed animal shelter (they are trying to help, but the number of rabbits is so high). Local rabbit rescue groups do not have enough permanent or foster space and need help immediately to save these bunnies. Anyone able to adopt rabbits to live indoors (think of them as being like cats that hop; litter trainable and want to live inside with the family), or even temporarily outdoors please contact us at 909-591-7200 or email caroline@bunnybunch.org to help. The rabbits are located in Orange County but we will find a way to transport them to anywhere in Southern California, and even other rescues across the United States. PLEASE contact us straight away.
Buster was owner-surrendered after four years of being a classroom bunny. Apparently, the teacher wanted to teach the kids a lesson because they weren't taking care of him so she took Buster to the shelter. (Sadly, the lesson they learned that day was that animals are disposable.) Buster is a very social, friendly, neutered English Spot cross bun. He weighs about seven pounds but he tolerates being picked up and being held like a big baby. He's such a great boy - one who really deserves better than an outdoor cage at a shelter. He's been at the pound for a year (!) and that's only because he's such a sweet, mellow guy. Let's get him out and into a foster or forever home where he can finally be a proper house rabbit! Please email Caroline@bunnybunch.org if you are interested in adopting Buster, or call 909-591-7200.

Grounds Pond
Rescue Help Urgently Needed!
There is a situation in Garden Grove, California that needs urgent attention. A drainage basin that is used to collect excess water runoff during the rainy season is being used regularly as a dumping ground for unwanted domestic rabbits. We estimate at this time there are between 300-500 domestic rabbits there. The area is surrounded by a sports field, shopping center and some residential homes. The rabbits frequently run into the streets surrounding the basin and are hit by oncoming cars. They are also frequently mistreated or tormented by people in the area, and found injured or dead. Not only is this traumatic for the rabbits, but also for the people in the area that do love and respect animals. Several well meaning local people have been feeding these rabbits for a few years. As you can imagine, due to the breeding behavior of rabbits, it is well out of control. The Bunny Bunch has been asked to step in and help. In order to make this a successful rescue and keep ahead of the rapidly increasing rabbit population, we will need to be able to catch and house a large number of rabbits at a time. Our plan is to be able to catch approximately 100 rabbits at a time, spay/neuter them, and find them permanent homes in groups. To be able to carry out this plan, we are going to need the following resources donated:
These animals are in extreme danger as the rainy season is near. As the basin fills with runoff rainwater, the rabbits will be forced to search for dryer land. This means they will be moving onto the sports fields, or forced to run into the roads to escape. The Bunny Bunch typically believes that rabbits belong in the house as part of a family. However, extreme circumstances sometimes call for extreme measures. All potential outdoor homes will be considered as long as they can provide a predator proof safe living environment for a group of rabbits. Please contact The Bunny Bunch if you can, or know of someone who can assist at 909-591-7200, or email pond_rescue@bunnybunch.org. Thanks a Bunny Bunch in this urgent matter. Four Rabbits
at High Risk! These
four rabbits are at a high kill shelter in the Inland Empire area, and
are in great danger of being killed within the next week or two. The
shelter is now almost full so time is of the essence to save these rabbits
lives. So far we have been able to get most of the rabbits out of this
shelter, but our foster homes are currently full so we need your help.

Another 300 Rescue Once again we find ourselves with an urgent situation of rescuing a large group of abandoned rabbits from a park in Southern California. We have been told that one year ago there were 30 rabbits in this park. These rabbits were dumped by people who no longer wanted them. One by one they have been thrown over the fence into the park to fend for themselves. The park is somewhat protected by trees, a fence and lots of places for burrows to be dug, so the rabbits set up colonies and of course started breeding. Now, a year later we are guessing that there are 300 or more rabbits residing there - many new litters are being born every day. So we are now in the planning, catching and fundraising stage of this rescue. We are applying for grants and seeking donations to raise $20,000.00 to help us with the spay and neuter of these rabbits. We are also looking for donated or low cost spay and neuters in Southern California to help us with this huge undertaking. It is hard for us to tell how many total rabbits there are, or will be by the time we have finished catching them all. Not counting the babies underground and new litters being born we are estimating 300 adult rabbits. So for spay and neuter alone we are talking over $15,000.00 for the rabbits we see there now. We do have a rabbit sanctuary already lined up to take (hopefully) 60 rabbits. We have to get them all fixed first, but have already found help transporting them to their new home in Ohio. But, after that we will need to find other safe havens for the rest of these rabbits to live. Where they are now is not a safe place for them to live so we need to act fast. If you are able to provide a safe haven for any of these rabbits please let us know. Many of these rabbits started off living as pets in peoples homes - many are very friendly and would make super house rabbits. So if you have it in your heart to give a needy bunny, pair of bunnies or group of bunnies a home, please contact us straight away at caroline@bunnybunch.org. or call our hotline (909) 591 7200. We really need homes now! Unfortunately some of these rabbits are being run over by cars on nearby streets, some are being killed by predators (including humans) and soon the rain will be coming. So please help us help them! We need to act fast to prevent further breeding and getting them into a safe place. You many donate
to this rescue via paypal by clicking here,
or by mailing a check to: The Bunny Bunch URGENT PARK RESCUE, PO Box 2583,
Chino, CA 91708. Every donation of any amount will help towards food,
shelter, housing, medical care, transporting and spay and neuter for these
rabbits. Thanks a Bunny
Bunch! GOOD NEWS! Thank you to everyone who has helped us or sent kind words our way. As you can see from the previous posts on our news we needed help with a number of rabbits. We are happy to say that we received a donation for the $350 needed to spay and neuter the rabbits that came into one of the Orange County shelters that we cover. This makes a massive difference in the lives of many rabbits. Not only can we get the rabbits spayed or neutered, but it helps us find them homes sooner, which means space will be freed up for other rabbits that are on their way to the shelter, so rabbits will not have to be killed to make room. As you know we are a no kill organization, but, we have volunteers at many shelters throughout Southern California trying to get spay/neuter programs in place at all shelters, trying to get the rabbits better living conditions, and educating the shelters and the public about rabbit care. Many of the shelters we work with have to take every animal that is brought through their doors. With so many people not wanting their rabbits and letting their rabbits breed it seems an impossible task for the shelters to take them all in, as there is so little space. Of course we take as many rabbits in as we can into our foster homes and take them to our weekend adoption events in hopes of finding them a forever home. Anyway, all this to say that any help we can get is greatly appreciated. More good news is that we were able to find super homes for our Angel Bunnies that were listed on a previous post on the news. Darmah is in a super home! She did not have her leg amputated as her other back leg is not in good enough shape to support her. But we were able to help her by getting her on a good diet and giving her some pain control. Now she is a happy healthy bunny. She has the whole downstairs of a house and manages to scoot around all over it. Bubbles ended up with an abscess because of his teeth, but luckily got adopted by a vet friend of ours who can take care of all his medical needs. He is now living with two other buns that have teeth problems, plus his bunny partner Penelope. Daisy the baby bunny with splayed legs also got adopted to live with two other rabbits. Frosty (mother to Daisy), who is blind in one eye and may be going blind in the other eye got adopted and is currently being bonded to the male bun of the house. The only bun out of the Angel buns we posted who is left is Moonpie (pictured at left). He is over his jaw abscess and has settled in nicely bonded to another male bun and a fluffy female bun. So now we are looking for a forever home for this lovely trio. For those
of you who emailed to find out what happened to Copper we are happy to
say we were able to get him out of the shelter into a foster home. In
a couple of weeks he will be ready for adoption. It's
always nice to have good news to report and because of your help and support
we are able to make a difference. Mother Rabbit and Babies Need Temp or Permanent Home ASAP

No experience needed, we will train you. If you live near Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Norco, Corona, Pomona, Huntington Beach or Orange, and can help us with rabbits at these shelters please email caroline@bunnybunch.org or call 909 951 7200. You can help as little
as once a month and as much as once a day, it is up to you. The more help
we have the more rabbits we can save. Thanks
a Bunny Bunch! Have You

Lady Bird (now June Bug) is a Happy, Healthy Rabbit
When
June Bug came in to our rescue he was in such bad shape that we did not
sex him, in fact we did not know if he would make it through the night.
After we took the photos and wrote the story for the website site, we
realized she is a he. The previous humans had him for years, thinking
he was a girl. Anyway, June Bug is one of the sweetest rabbits every.
He is always happy to see you, loves to lick your whole face and loves
to be fussed over.
Ladybird,
a Rabbit With the Will to Survive Ladybird was brought into our
program hardly alive. As you can see, she had a very bad case of mites.
Her poor ears were pulled down as if she were a lop, her back and eyes
were scabbed over from mite infestation. Her right eye was closed shut
and infected, she had sore hocks, could hardly walk due to being kept
in a small cage and her breathing was labored. Plus, the smell of the
rotting flesh, filth and infection was over bearing.
Poor thing! She had lived like this for months, if not years, in a small filthy cage! We started treatment on her straight away, giving her round the clock care in hopes that she would make it. We gave her pain meds, antibiotics, treatment for the mites, sub-q fluids, meds to support her G.I. track, kept her on a heating disk and syringe fed her to keep her alive. It was very sad to see this poor bun in such a horrific state. We had many ups and downs in the first few days, but slowly, day by day, she is improving. At first she had tiny poops, so more G.I. treatments were needed. We put her in a large pen so she could get used to using her leg muscles again. At first she walked like a caterpillar; but before long she started to hop again, and after five days she even jumped out of her pen! She started to eat on her own - veggies, crushed up pellets, hay and grasses that we grow in a cup. She also started drinking water. Before long all the debris from the mite infestation started dropping off and she started grooming herself.
A beautiful bunny bloomed, whom we named "Ladybird".
Dear Dudley
Lives on Through Bigsley!
Our hearts were broken when we lost our sweet Dudley last year. He was a very special rabbit, and not just any-bunny can take over his column in The Rabbit Patch, so choosing his successor has been a very difficult task. After careful consideration, we are proud to announce the heir to Dudley's throne. The newest member of the Rabbit Patch team is the famous Bigsley Bunny! Bigsley will be making his column debut in the next issue of The Rabbit Patch with Dear Bigsley. Please write to Bigsley with your questions, concerns or anything else that you would like to discuss. Bigsley is also featured in the new 2006 Annual Rabbits USA magazine. See him on page 26 and page 30. You can mail
Bigsley at: Abandoned
